Spring Cleaning Your Finances: How to Get Organised Before the Year-End Rush
Stienemarié Bonsma-Potgieter, CFP® – Financial Planner
Spring is the season of fresh starts. Just as you might clear out cupboards or tidy the garden, it’s the perfect time to give your finances the same attention. A financial spring clean helps you see where you stand, fix what’s out of order, and set up good habits before the year-end rush arrives.
1. Clear Out Financial Clutter
Start with the basics. Review your bank statements, debit orders, and subscriptions. Cancel what you don’t use or need. Small deductions add up quickly, and trimming unnecessary expenses frees up money for savings or debt repayment.
2. Review Your Budget
Life shifts during the year. A new baby, school fees, or rising costs at the grocery store or petrol station. Make sure your budget reflects your reality today, not six months ago. A fresh budget also highlights where you may be overspending and where you can redirect funds towards your goals.
3. Check Your Emergency Fund
An emergency fund is your financial safety net. Ideally, you should have three to six months of living expenses saved. If yours has been dipped into, set a plan to top it up before year-end.
4. Revisit Your Debt Strategy
Debt has a way of creeping in unnoticed. List your balances and focus on paying off the most expensive debt first, usually credit cards or personal loans. Even a small extra payment each month reduces interest and shortens repayment time.
5. Update Your Investment and Retirement Plans
Markets move and so do your circumstances. Review your retirement contributions and investment portfolios. Are you on track with your goals? If not, consider increasing contributions now rather than waiting for the “New Year, new me” momentum.
6. Refresh Your Insurance Cover
Major life changes like marriage, children or a new home may mean your insurance no longer fits. Check that your life cover, disability cover, and medical aid still protect your family properly. The same goes for short term risk cover on your car, house and other personal belongings.
7. Set Year-End Goals
December often comes with extra expenses. Plan ahead for holiday spending, school uniforms, or family commitments. Setting aside money now helps you avoid debt later.
Spring cleaning your finances is about clearing what no longer serves you and putting stronger systems in place. By tackling these steps now, you give yourself breathing space before the year-end busyness begins. The reward is peace of mind and the confidence that your money is working for you.
